Sydney - the Wharf

Staying With the Gentrification Theme
Just west of the harbor bridge is a large wharf which was the epicenter of the wool trade. It is now a renovated mix of stylish apartments and commercial space. Where wharfies once toiled endlessly for low pay, the upwardly mobile now sip lattes and fine wine. I'd be referring to myself if I weren't imminently downwardly mobile....

Throughout, the developers tried to maintain a link to the past. There were history plaques here and there.

The piers were the most impressive. You even get a parking space for your yacht. From reading the papers I get the impression that the real estate market never took much of a rest here in Australia. Some argue they're in a bubble but others point to China's endless quest for raw materials as the cushion. It used to be wool, now it's minerals and iron ore.

These giant gears are now silent - relegated to industrial chic.

This pier was strictly commercial. Seems like a cool place to work, if not difficult to get to.
