Penang - Regular Hood

People's Court
This small neighborhood is just south of Campbell Street, we discovered it while looking for a bakery. It's old-world Malaysia. Small houses, smaller businesses, laundry hanging out to dry. It's called People's Court and the name seems apt.

Old and new clash in the usual ways in Penang: new development. In the distance is Komtar, an office building that when completed in 1986 was the tallest building in Asia at 65 stories. It's now only the sixth tallest building in Malaysia but still reigns supreme in Penang.

Outside of a small fish shop we saw eight large pans of fish tidbits, drying in the sun. When I asked Dodo what it was, she turned up her nose and said "I don't like salted fish."

Close by was a storefront you tiao vendor. They looked to be a wholesaler but MC talked them into selling one. You tiao is a deep-fried bread stick. I took a bite and felt as I always do: with just a bit of sugar and/or cinnamon these things could become a worldwide sensation.
