Sydney - Gentrification

Surry Hills
This old neighborhood dates back to the early 1800's and was named after Surrey Hills in Surrey, England. It's the usual story - close to downtown, folks abandoned it for the suburban dream and in the 1970's the entire neighborhood was derelict. Lately, it has made a big comeback.

Just 15 years ago these small row houses could be purchased for a song. Now, you'd have to fork over a million or so for one.

They're narrow and long and have porches on both levels, trimmed with Victorian wrought iron fencing.

You can tell it's only recently made its comeback - parts of it are scruffy still. I walked around for about an hour admiring the houses and small shops.

I settled on a small cafe that looked out onto the street.
