Singapore - Night Photos

Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands
I joined up with Pirate, MC and Ying Ying, three of Dodo's girlfriends for a night of photography.  We headed downtown to the marina and parked next to the Singapore Flyer, a large ferris wheel.  We planned to head towards the Marina Bay Sands hotel, on the right.

Singapore - Weapons Training

and I Thought I Was Hot...
Did I mention that we were playing our Futsal match at an Indian community center?  Well, in the pitch next to us a very interesting Sikh ritual called "Gatka" was taking place.  Gatka is a Sikh martial arts that developed in the late 1600's as a means of fighting back against Mughal oppression.  You can read up on it here.  I wasn't quite sure what was on the table as the men arranged themselves for photos.

Singapore - Futsal

Getting in Shape, Singapore Style
Dodo's brother Ben and I are pushing each other to get in shape.  When two lazies get going, it's dangerous.  We've been running, playing basketball, doing situps and pushups and most recently playing Futsal which is a contraction of the Spanish " fútbol de salón" or indoor soccer.  The Singapore version is played on a small outdoor field boxed in by a net.  I estimate the field to be about 60 yds by 25 yds which suits the 10 total players, 5 a side including the goalie.  Ben's friends rent the field each Sunday from 11:30am to 2:30pm.  There were enough players for four teams.

Singapore - New Fruit

New to Me, That Is...
Dodo's cousing bought me some Mangosteens and was eager to see if I liked them.  She said "it's kinda like durian" which stopped me dead in my tracks.  Durian is a SE Asian fruit that conjures up smelly, sweaty, cheesy feet.  "Durian?!?!?", I yelled, handing them back to her.  No, it doesn't TASTE like durian, she explained, it's similar in that it originates in this part of the world and I doubt you've had it.  She was right.

Singapore - Cab Ride

Granny Behind the Wheel
Yesterday we got a ride from a grey-haired granny in her cab.  I've never seen this before anywhere in the world.  She was so cute.  She drove, well, like a granny.  If you look through the windshield you'll see a sign that says "Slow Down."  She took it quite literally, changing lanes at a glacial pace, getting passed on the highway by everyone, though nobody dared honk.   She flashed me a nice granny smile when I gave her a tip - something you don't usually do in Singapore.  I couldn't help it - she was awesome.  Best cab ride I've taken yet.

Singapore - Condo Update

Who Will Win the Bet?
The official handover date for the condo is Feb 2012, however in Singapore the developers usually beat their estimate by 6 months or so.  Dodo and I have an over/under bet.  She says we'll get the keys prior to July 1st, 2011 and I've taken the over.  Both buildings have reached full height.  We will be in the left building, the top two floors on the right side.  The left building has 17 stories, the 17th being the roof decks for the two "penthouse" apartments.  The right building has 16 stories.  At the bottom of the left building, they've made a lot of progress on the pool - it's elevated more than I expected - at least 2-3 stories.  Makes sense, since the garage is underneath.

Singapore - the New Mall

Just a Year Later and it's Already Open
You may not remember the post about the mall that was being built across from Dodo's mom's house.  Click on the link for that post.  That was a year ago and guess what - it's open for business.  It's pretty large and sits on top of the two subway lines that converge underneath.  The bus interchange is moving into the lower level as well.  All coordinated and concentrated.  I've been in a few times.  It's like a giant food court - there are more restaurants than stores, which is a very Singaporean trait I guess.  There is a cineplex on the top floor, which is nice.  We already went to see a Thai movie last week and we're going to go see a Japanese one soon.

Melbourne vs Sydney

Like New York vs Los Angeles?
Having only spent a few days in each city I'm probably not qualified to opine.  Out on the internet there are plenty of opinions and it was interesting to read the e-arguments between the citizens.  From my point of view, Sydney seems more like the big brother, flush with cash, full of beauty.  Melbourne is the little brother, perhaps with a chip on his shoulder.  You look for the small lane with the quaint coffee shop in Melbourne while you eat in style in Sydney.  Melbourne seems smaller, more laid back, greener and has better public transport.  Sydney has take your breath away sights - it's hard ot beat their harbor.

Melbourne - the Deal

Horse Trading for Photo Ops
By the time Monday afternoon rolled around I was pretty beat.  The weather was a lot cooler than it should've been for the time of year - high 50's to low 60's with a chilly wind.  I hadn't packed correctly so I was a bit tired of being cold.  When Dodo asked me for the fifth time "Do you want to go to Federation Square?" I began to understand that she really wanted to go.  I don't exactly have a high EQ and I really didn't want to go but I thought about a nice trade-off....  "I'll go if you let me take photos of you jumping in the air" I said.  I never thought she'd go through with it.

Melbourne - At Dinner

Eating Vietnamese with a Paparazzo
Melbourne has a large number of Asian immigrants, primarily from Hong Kong and Vietnam.  They tend to stay in a suburn called Richmond, which is NE of downtown a few clicks.  Late one night we trammed our way over there and picked a Vietnamese restaurant the good old-fashioned way: we walked down the main drag until we found one that was packed with Vietnamese.  We were quickly seated and handed menus when Dodo conducted a menu symphony composed of nine movements.  Enjoy.

Melbourne - On Getting Lost....

and Friendliness
We did some web research and found a promising fish and chips spot for lunch.  We hopped a tram near the hotel and started our journey only to realize we weren't necessarily sure we were headed the right way.  The trams seem to be for locals, not tourists - if you don't know what stop is coming it's hard to figure it out - like a bus, they only stop if you pull a stop cord.  We finally did just that but when we got off, we were nowhere near our lunch.  We took another tram the opposite way and finally gave up.  When we got off we argued about which way to go. Since I'm a man I was sure which way to go - you know how that is.

Melbourne - Arts Center

Strange Building
We took a stroll around the Melbourne Arts Center which hosts a weekend arts market.  I liked the building - it has a intersting scaffold roof that looks like a sharp witch's hat.

Melbourne - More Street Art

Narrow Alley Gallery
You don't see any and then without warning you bump into a whole bunch.  This set from a small alley in the north of the CBD.

Melbourne - Royal Botanical Gardens

Late Spring Luck
Pure happenstance that we visited in late spring.  This is a beautifully green city with a large botanical garden.  At this time of year the leaves are fresh and the flowers bright.  We walked from one corner of the park to the other and it was absolutely lovely.  At the end of our walk we stopped for a high tea at the side of a lake.

Melbourne - Rained out at St Kilda

But at Least it was Memorable
St Kilda is a beach town south of Melbourne a few kilometers.  We went to check out the Sunday market and as soon as we stepped off the tram a nasty storm hit.  It was so windy and rainy that we ducked under one of the vendor's tents.  It got worse and worse - to the point that some of us grasped the tents-sides and roof poles to keep it from being blown away.  For a few precarious moments I thought I might go airborn and get a birdseye view of the town.

Melbourne - Out to the Burbs

Heading South to South Yarra
Melbourne is a town of many neighborhoods, one known to be schwanks - South Yarra, about 3k south.  According to my research, Melbourne has the most extensive tram network in the world and it's hard to doubt that fact - they're everywhere.

Melbourne - Night Shot

Missed the Flames...
Along the river, for the first 2 minutes of every hour, huge flames shoot up from cauldrons.  Of course, it took me a while to figure this out.  When we were down there - nothing.  I will try to catch a photo of it before we leave....

Melbourne - Checking in from the Bottom of the World

Working and Planning
I took an overnight 7-hr flight to Melbourne, arriving around 10am local time, 7am body time.  Our hotel is perched on the southern banks of the Yarra river, across from the Central Business District.  Today's my last day of work so I spent most of it in the hotel on the computer.  I did, however, sneak out at lunch to get a bite and snap off a few shots.

Singapore - Working Hard

Trying to Wrap Up a Lot Prior to Vacation
The Dodo is already in Australia - Sydney to be exact.  I am still in Singapore until Thur evening and then I head out to Melbourne where she'll meet up with me Friday night.  I've been working double-shifts to try to wrap up some work prior to my two week year end vacation.  Today I worked most of the afternoon at an outdoor cafe.  I am in the "reflections" phase of my photography hobby, for some reason.  I can't seem to get enough of them.  In this shot I was trying to get the palm tree reflection in the sunglasses, table top and iPhone.  The focus was the fronds in the iPhone reflection, blurring everything else.

Singapore - Rainy Season

Making the Best of the Bad Weather
Bad weather is in the eye of the beholder.  I love the rainy season here, it cools things down and now that I'm shooting more with my new camera, it offers up all kinds of reflective surfaces.  I didn't have an umbrella yesterday but I managed to duck and run and stay mostly dry.  While waiting for Dodo to arrive at lunch I snapped a few shots.

Paris - Braving the Elements

At Least this City Has One Thing Going for It...
Paris on Sunday is like a funeral.  Everything is closed up.  So damned boring.  However, it is a photogenic place so now that I am using a tripod I can go places and try new styles of photos.  Let's call this one the "cliched water reflection shot in Canal St Martin."  I think everyone who comes to Paris takes this exact shot but I wanted to see if I could do it.  There is a fisherman on the right, believe it or not.

Paris - Jetlag

Four Days and Counting
I handled the jetlag pretty well but I simply cannot get to sleep early yet.  Midnight, shot through my living room window.

Paris - Snowstorm

Musée de l'Armée - During a Snowstorm
After a nice breakfast in the 7th I walked by this artillery museum to take some shots in the snow.  One thing I learned is that if you are taking shots with a tripod everyone assumes you're a photography expert.  People kept coming over to request I take photos of them with their cameras.  It happened about five or six times.

Paris - Night Photos

Getting Up to Speed
After reading up on night photography and borrowing a tripod from a colleague I went out tonight in freezing 25 degree weather to give it a shot.  I jumped on the train to Chatelet and walked over to the Seine.  These shots are looking towards the west.  I took about 50 shots of varying aperture and exposure and ended up with four that I liked.  Enjoy.

Paris - Decathlon, Part III

The Kid Goes Up 2 to 1 in the Overall
Colin and I battled tonight in bowling, a decathlon event we added so others could join.  Four colleagues joined and we battled on two lanes.  I beat Colin in all three games but the best of all was the final game in which each person put up five euros on a winner take all.  I bowled a 150 for the win - which I then used to take a long, expensive cab ride home.  In that final game, even Ming beat Colin, something he is bound to be teased about tomorrow.

Manhattan - Hairstyles

But does it entice you to come into the hairstyling shop?  Doubt it.

Manhattan - Reflections on the Peak

Caught at the Top
The past few years developers raced to complete buildings prior to the crash.  This narrow residential tower on 23rd Street wasn't so lucky.  I thought they might make it, but the developer went bankrupt just as the building was nearing completion.  The building sits empty and dark, which is nice if you want to photograph reflections of the Met Life building.  I've learned that I probably need a tripod for night photography.  In order to allow in sufficient light, you use a very slow shutter speed and if you make the slightest movement you end up with a blurred photo.  I'd like to try this shot with a tripod to see the difference.

Manhattan - November Golf

Getting Lucky Late in the Year
I don't think I've ever golfed so late in the year in NY.  When I got home last week Che got my hopes up "keep Friday open, it's gonna be close to 60 degrees."  I didn't believe him but he was right.  Perfect reason for a half-day.  We played in New Jersey.

Manhattan - Madison Square Park

I Shoulda Been an Artist
Not that I have any artistic talent, but then again, did the person who strung up this box of lights?  Caught at 7am this morning in Madison Square Park, a park at 23rd Street that I  pass through on the way to work.

Paris - Struggling to Make the Jump

No, Not Him, Me
I'm trying to take more photos of people.  There's no end to the characters here in Paris but I'm having trouble making the adjustment.  People move. They walk around the corner and right by you while you're still fiddling with your camera buttons.  Even this guy, doing his Tai Chi routine, got fed up with me. I was ringside playing with my camera and he stopped and waved me off.  "People don't like having their photos taken, babe."  said Dodo, trying to console me.  Man, this is harder than it looks.  You gotta be ready for them, you gotta be quick and you gotta be discreet.

Paris - Color Me a Convert

It Sure Took Me Long Enough...
I finally took the plunge, I was so tired trying to find an open newspaper kiosk in Paris for the pleasure of wasting $4 on a watered down NY Times known as the International Herald Tribune.  What a crap paper.  I got the latest Kindle, the one that weighs about 3 feathers and quitely delivers my NY Times each morning via Wifi.  I get it every day, including Sunday for just 19 bucks/month.  Brilliant.  There are pros and cons: no ads but no color either.  Nope, cannot page through a paper, you use a button to scroll.  Unexpectedly, since you see one article at a time, you end up reading more of the paper than normal.  No distractions, no other headlines vying for your attention.  I am an unabashed convert.  I also have a New Yorker subscritption and am reading a book.

Paris - Halloween

Not So Popular
I asked my colleagues at work if Halloween were celebrated in Paris.  They said not so much, it's not as popular as it was a few years back.  We did see a few kids getting into the spirit.

Paris - Salon du Chocolat

Chocolate, Chocolate and More Chocolate
Sal, I think you would've felt as overwhelmed as we did inside this giant convention center, surrounded by some of the most famous European chocolate makers.  This was an all chocolate affair.

Paris - The New Office

Shiny and New
This is as modern and nice as it gets in Paris I bet.  Bright and clean, big windows.

Paris - Levallois

The Seine
The Seine is right across the street from our new offices.  It's a very beautiful section, with fancy riverboats parked beneath large trees that hug the shore.  On the right side of this photo is a small island that sits in the river - a place where Sarkozy once had a house.
