Check In at the Onsen

For Some R and R
Karuizawa is a destination for Tokyoites, a place out in the country with fresh air. In the winter you can come skiing, which we planned to do but the main focus was soaking in the hot springs, otherwise known as onsen. The grounds were very nice - wooden cottages arranged around small ponds. Nothing about it looked swanky until we entered the main hall.

It was at this point that I realized how much expensive this trip had to be. This is a shot of the check-in counter.

The breakfast room, from above, with large windows looking out onto the grounds.

Another shot of the breakfast room. Above that stone wall was a small sitting area that had a library adjacent to it.

Here's the view onto the pond from our room.

A traditional wooden tub, with accompanying stool.

Our seating area.

Our traditional beds - as explained earlier almost nobody in Japan sleeps in the same bed, not even married couples. The whole focus of the place is soaking in the hot springs, relaxing, eating healthy, relaxing. No tv in the room.
