Our Home Base
We're staying in the historic district of Cali, in the foothills on the northwest side of town. Our house is at the top of a steep hill, across the street from a shaggy park that crowns the neighborhood. The facade is an optical illusion - it's larger inside than expected.
Once you step inside the front door, there's a long hallway that runs like a spine down the middle of the house. There are five bedrooms of varying sizes and three bathrooms along the hallway, which is open to the elements.
This is a view back to the front door.
There is a kitchen, dining area and veranda for the guests to share. When you wander out in the early morning to make coffee it is around 70 degrees, the usual low in Cali. By mid-afternoon it's 85 degrees. The starfruit and mango trees are brimming with birds, most are outrageously colorful.
The veranda looks south onto the city. The mountains are behind us and the next range is too far away to see with the naked eye.
Sombra, the resident dog. His name means "shadow" in Spanish. He's friendly and playful.
Moises is usually either sleeping or cleaning himself.
The place is decorated nicely, there is an open air sitting room in the hallway outside our bedroom. We've met a few Germans, some Americans and an older gentleman from the Netherlands. One couple has been on the road for a year, going from SE Asia to South Africa to South America. It makes our three months seem unambitious.
Our bedroom is very comfortable.
We have an adjoining bathroom, most of the remaining guests share one of the two bathrooms in the hallway.
There is another level downstairs, with three of four more bedrooms. The owners, a Colombian woman and her Polish boyfriend, live downstairs and rent out the additional lower level bedrooms to long-term guests who work here in Cali. We hadn't moved in for more than two hours before we had a special guest on our bed.
