Italy - Driving

Tailgating is the National Sport
Whether you're on the highway, road, country lane or even in the parking lot, you can rest assured an Italian is driving five inches from your back bumper.  Tailgating in Italy is a high art form.  They're looking to pass or maybe not - everyone here thinks they're a Formula 1 driver.  In three weeks in Italy I've spent more time pulling over to get people off my rear than in three years in Singapore - where the second best tailgaters live.

As it turns out, down the road from our Benabbio house, a real race took place.  It's called the Coppa da Citta di Lucca - a rally race held over two days, the Benabbio portion from midnight to 7am.

They closed off the road and set the cars off in one minute intervals.  The only difference between these guys and the normal tailgaters is the former wear helmets and have sponsors.

Here is a short video compilation from the race.

Makes the racers on Fellows Ave. look like amateurs, doesn't it? How do people sleep through the engine noise?

We felt sorry for the lady who lived right next to the starting line. It was so loud.
