Cover from Sun and Rain
I felt sorry for the workers. Not only was it hot and sunny but they had to hand carry a lot of the equipment and materials up 17 flights because it wouldn't fit in the elevator. I thought one of them was going to pass out. He sat on the floor outside the door to the stairs, head bent, huffing and puffing.
The work commenced this morning and should last another day and a half. We are covering half of the trellis with a hard semi-tranparent polycarbonate. It looks like glass but is smoky gray. It blocks out the UV rays. So far they've only installed a few feet and have left the protective paper on.
Along the western edge of the trellis we're putting in a retractable awning that will completely block the afternoon sun (or so they promise.) When fully unrolled it will hang just short of the sink, barbecue and flower box along the western wall.
The awning is already installed but not yet hooked up to the electrical supply. On the far end, the polycarbonate supports have been installed and protrude outwards so that the edge of the polycarbonate will carry rainfall onto the awning.
On the eastern side there is large sun shade. It can be raised and lowered to block the morning sun and light rain.
There will be a similar sun shade on the northern side, which you can see on the left of this picture. Both sun shades are anchored with steel cabling at their edges. It looks good so far.
