Just Like Everywhere Else, Except...
Kyoto looks like every other Japanese town except for Gion, a national historical prevervation neighborhood. Gion is known for being one of the most famous, exclusive geisha districts dating back to the middle ages.
Alongside a lazy river, the main thrust of the neighborhood was nothing special.
But just a few steps away are quiet, traditional streets.
Many of the houses have beautiful bamboo skirting that bows out to the sidewalk. I couldn't figure any use for this - it looks to be decorative.
We walked slowly along the lanes and took it all in. It's rare to see neighborhoods like this in Japan from my experience and it stands out.
The focus is Shirakawa canal, where if you're lucky, you can see geisha shuffle by. None did so while we were there.
