You're Surrounded
With the exception of perhaps Mumbai, Hong Kong has some of the ugliest buildings I've ever seen. Many of them are decrepit cement blocks painted in garish colors. Some of the more modern buldings are ok but they should knock down the rest and start over.
Strangely, many of the buildings seem to have their plumbing on the outside. It's as if they were built prior to plumbing and then the pipes were retrofitted to the exterior. It makes them appear as if they've been turned inside out.
Then there are the air conditioning units. There seems to be one unit per room tacked onto the exterior, which only adds to the ugliness. When you combine it all: crumbling cement buildings, pipes and AC units cobbled on top, you get a whirlwind of ugly. Sadly, it's in contrast to the amazing natural beauty of the islands that make up HK.

About plumbing on the outside of buildings, we saw the same thing in Britain. The buildings were so old, they didn't have inside plumbing originally. When IP was retrofitted, it was much less expensive to put the pipes mostly outside.
@Sal - I don't remember that. But in HK, I don't think these buildings were put up prior to plumbing - they are skyscrapers for crying out loud.
