I was up in the Cuse for 5 solid days and the only helpful thing I did was reattach the railings to the front porch. Sal got em stripped and re-painted. They look pretty nice.

Yesterday, mid-50's and rainy. Woke up this morning to flurries, dusting everything with a nice, fresh coat. I took this shot to show the fat flakes falling but they didn't come out on film.

Catching Up With the Brothers Indian...
Plus Four, Soon...
My colleague Dinesh was in NY this week and so was his wife, his brother and his brother's wife. Dinesh is the guy whose wedding I attended in Mumbai. I knew that Dinesh's wife was pregnant but I didn't know his sis-in-law was too! It was nice to catch up with them all. Dinesh's brother just recently graduated from a culinary school, which is poor timing, obviously. He's on a job-hunt now. His wife Vidyi, sporting her large stomach below, is about to pop in three weeks! Dinesh's wife is due in April and she's not having an enjoyable pregnancy at all. She cannot keep any food down for than an hr. Her doctor told her that's ok as long as she can keep it in for 20 minutes - that's enough for the baby. We caught up at one of their favorite restaurants, check that out here.

A Walk Around the Neighborhood
When I moved to Brooklyn in 1991 it was the peak of the homicide rate in New York City history. You can only improve from there, I guess. I never could have imagined the wave of gentrification that was to come, however. Buildings went up at record speed, empty lots were filled, new stores and restaurants opened along Court and Smith streets. Brooklyn became the hip place to be. We are now post-peak and rolling down the other side, gathering steam. Being away for the better part of a year has made the deterioration obvious. First Court St - this is the former mom and pop video rental store. Internet killed it.

Brooklyn Morning
Working off the Jetlag
Today I woke up at 4:45am. In Paris that would have created a sense of dread - four hours before I can find any coffee or grub! I wandered out at the crack of dawn and made my way to my favorite spot. The coffee was as rich and bracing as always - jolted me right awake.

Merry Trashmas
Simple Design is the Best
Someone came up with a simple, elegant design for a Christmas tree made from empty plastic bottles. Don't know if this was sponsored by the municipal government or was the idea of a local artist - the entire square outside the Louvre was "littered" with them.

It's That Time of Year Again...
The End of One Signals the Start of Another
Yesterday evening was the 12th day of Christmas. It's celebrated today two ways: first, it's the day to eat the Galette des Rois (King's cake) and second, it's the first day of the soldes (sales.) I went all out this year and bought a Galette des Rois and shared it with my colleagues. Read about that here. If you recall, there are only two times a year when the major sales happen...

Yikes!
Get Me Outta Here!
Dad, I'm starting to agree with you - this winter crap is for the birds. As we were landing in Paris this morning I listened closely to the captain's announcements. My French is good enough to understand "moins sept degrees" - that's like 19 fahrenheit! From 90 to 19 in 12 hrs flat! At least it's sunny here......

Hobby from the Old Country
Birding, Chinese Style
We went for breakfast at a nearby hawker center this morning. In the interior courtyard, between the tall buildings, there were lattices specifically designed as a "bird run." Residents bring their birds here and hang the cages in close proximity. The birds sing much more when in their own company. The owners sat nearby, staring, totally engrossed in the sights and songs. Definitely easier than walking the dog.

From all accounts, Pingle's aunt is one of the best cooks in the family. I expressed a desire to learn how to make a dish called fried Bee Hoon, which is just vermicelli, wok-fried, with some seafood and veggies added. It's a simple dish, supposedly. That is, until I got my lesson.
