Puerto Piramides, Argentina - Whales

Whale Failure
The Valdez Peninsula is one of the premier places on earth to see whales.  The closest we got to seeing a whale was the one Dodo drew as we wiled away time in a local cafe in Puerto Piramides.  It was a matter of timing - ours wasn't ideal.  The best time is September and October.

The Valdez Peninsula is a nature reserve and there is just one town, with about 500 inhabitants: Puerto Piramides.  You pay to get into the reserve and can stay in the town if you like.  We rented a lovely AirBnB and took a short bus ride there from Puerto Madryn.
It was immediately apparent to me that we weren't going to luck out.  The day we arrived the wind was blowing about fifty miles an hour and the sea was anything but welcoming.  We inquired at a local tour company and the woman looked up at me as if I were an idiot and told me to come back tomorrow "to see."  The whales were already gone and it took us a day to finally accept it.
We contented ourselves with trips to a cafe for rounds of coffee and cake and walks on the beach.
