We took off from Buenos Aires and climbed out over the brown ocean, the subject of a heated discussion with a taxi driver a few days prior. "It is a RIVER, not an ocean", he said somewhat angrily, staring at me in the rear view mirror. Perhaps he'd never taken this flight or looked at a map. This was clearly an ocean and still very brown, no doubt due to the sediments being dumped into it by the Uruguay river. Within minutes we were following the river north.and there was a grid work of farms on either side, some greener than others, which eventually gave way to thick, misty jungle. Below us were Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil - fit together like a jigsaw puzzle and near the point where the three meet, a torrent of water surges over jagged cliffs to create the most spectacular falls you're likely to see in your lifetime.

Iguazu Falls, Argentina - Water
Mightily Impressive

Trelew, Argentina - Cymru
The Welsh Influence
It's truly strange to be welcomed into the Trelew airport in Welsh first, then Spanish, English and Portuguese. This is the epicenter of Welsh entry into Patagonia. What were they thinking? Well, for one, they wanted to emigrate somewhere isolated so they wouldn't lose their language and culture. The Argentinian government couldn't have been happier - they wanted people to populate the desolate areas south of Buenos Aires and fight with the locals - the Tehuelche. The arrivees must have been shocked when they got off the boat in 1865. This is a desert along the ocean. There is one measly river.

Punta Tombo, Argentina - Penguins
Penguin Success
Compared with our whale hunt in Puerto Piramides, we had better luck in Punta Tombo, a marine reserve about 70 miles south of Trelew. The timing was much better - it was peak nesting season.

Puerto Piramides, Argentina - Whales
Whale Failure
The Valdez Peninsula is one of the premier places on earth to see whales. The closest we got to seeing a whale was the one Dodo drew as we wiled away time in a local cafe in Puerto Piramides. It was a matter of timing - ours wasn't ideal. The best time is September and October.

Argentina - Patagonia
From Bariloche to Viedma
It's true - they love their meat. Dodo ordered a small portion and they warned her it wasn't much, just a snack, something to eat while waiting for the real portion to arrive. When it arrived, I laughed. She couldn't finish it and took most of it to go. We continued to eat it at home for the next two days.
