Hobby from the Old Country

Birding, Chinese Style
We went for breakfast at a nearby hawker center this morning. In the interior courtyard, between the tall buildings, there were lattices specifically designed as a "bird run." Residents bring their birds here and hang the cages in close proximity. The birds sing much more when in their own company. The owners sat nearby, staring, totally engrossed in the sights and songs. Definitely easier than walking the dog.

There were two different structures, one with a roof and one without. Each was for a specific type of bird and bird cage. The larger wooden birdcages, housing a bigger, louder black-colored bird that jumped up and down constantly, were hung from the roofless lattice. Smaller birds in smaller cages got the roof. Not sure what type of birds these were or what the thinking is behind the different structures.

I shot a short video to capture the singing.

Loved the video/audio you posted. That's an ingenious way for your pet bird to have some company. I'm getting birds at the feeder but they're not wasting any energy on singing!

Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool. Just not sure why everyone has the exact same birdcage - I found that kinda weird.

Birds in cages are kinda weird. There is probably only one guy in the city who makes bird cages and it is his only design.
