Singapore - Friends Two

Meiwan and Jia Ming
Meiwan is another of Jean's long time friends.  She, like Jean, loves to eat and will drive all over the island to get the best Char Kway Teow or Roti Prata.  She was my squash partner while I lived in Singapore - we played about once a month, sometimes with Gina, sometimes just the two of us.

She and her husband Jia Ming picked us up at 6:45am so we could head to breakfast at one of our favorite hawker centers in Tiong Bahru.  Jia Ming is a cancer survivor - it's been five years since he fought off a nasty dose of it.  He is the sweetest guy, smiling his way through the whole ordeal and seemingly never looking back.  He has an inner peace and calmness that is mystifying.  He is the yin to Meiwan's yang, she the hard charger and workaholic who seems to have had a recent change of heart.  "The only reward you get for your hard work is more work" she told me over coffee and toast.
Hanging with these two is always drama-free and enjoyable.  We shared stories and a plate of chwee kueh - rice cake with a preserved radish topping.  Oily but delicious.
