Beaune - Wine Capital of Burgundy

Market Behind the Walls
Beaune is a small town thirty minutes drive from Puligny-Montrachet that sits behind medieval walls and a moat.  It's the epicenter of the Burgundy wine trade, just about all businesses here relate to it in one form or another.  We lucked into a thriving food market and bought a block of cheese, mustard, some strawberries and a bottle of wine.

Every November they hold one of the most famous wine auctions in the world at the Hospices de Beaune, a former poor house built in the 1500's.  They auction off the wine by the barrel and bids come in from around the world.

As usual we had no particular aim, we wandered around and settled outside an ancient brasserie for a cup of coffee.  We'd targeted a specific restaurant for lunch but it was closed so we decided to grab lunch somewhere on the way to Vézelay.

Beaune is only 20 miles down the road from Dijon.  Wherever grapes weren't growing, mustard took up the slack.  I tried many varieties of it, sometimes on my cheese.  It's like a sharp punch in the nose.  We brought a few bottles along with us.
