Brooklyn - Serious Reading

I'm Getting Ready
Rather than reading nordic murder mysteries, I'm boning up on my Mah Jong skills. I use the term "skills" loosely - I generally have no idea what I'm doing. I read this book once before but now that I've played more I'm starting to pick up things the second read through. I'm back in Singapore in August and I'm tired of donating to the Aunties. I've been reading, practicing and discussing strategy with my coach. I think I'm slowly getting better but ask me at the end of August....

I had a first mah jongg lesson yesterday at a local chinese arts shop. Watched some folks play at the y last week and decided to learn a bit about it.

Our neighbor and her Hadassah buddies used to play Mah Jong once a week the women used to have a regular bridge day or Canasta day. At first I thought it was connected with Judaism. Ancient Jewish game, maybe. :-)

@Pops - that's cool. I hope you like it. The rules are a bit different by country but not drastically so.

Maybe we can have a game altogether in Syracuse over Thanksgiving :)

@Puffin - yeah, then I can put my Mah Jong set to use! (Thought I cannot imagine carrying it on the plane, it weighs like 22 lbs.)

Guess I'd better learn the Mah Jong rules between now & the end of November, huh? Well, maybe it'll keep my little gray cells firing.

@Sal - they're a doozy. I'm learning there are levels upon levels upon levels of skill. First, learning all the hands and points. Next, all the ways to accumulate those hands. After that, paying attention to what everyone else is doing/discarding to know what you can safely discard and on and on and on.....

Well if we're going to play during Turkey Day, we need to play with just the basic rules. I'm a college student now, with no time to learn all these extra games lol

@Mach - basic rules? Hahahaha - you have no idea. You better learn to recognize Chinese characters for 1-10 and be able to order them quickly... That is lesson one....

Ok, by basic rules, I meant American rules. But I guess I can squeeze in some Chinese characters in the next 4 months.
