Italy - Tirrenia

No Speedo Needed
The beach is only an hour away and there are many to choose from.  Most look like this - rows and rows of umbrellas and chairs for rent.  The one we went to was in a neighborhood called Tirrenia, which is south of Pisa a few miles.  We paid 12 Euros and were deposited in the last row, far from the water.

When a few chairs opened near the water, we sneaked up and took them only to be scolded by the lifeguard-slash-overseer.  "Noooo-nooo-noooo, not dare.  Thee laaast file, the laaaast file."  By which he meant the last row - where we belonged.  We got up and began gathering our stuff when he plopped down some loungers near the edge of the surf and motioned for us to take them.  We still cannot figure out why - perhaps he felt bad about yelling at us.

Anyways, there we were right up front for the speedo and bikini show.  No photos of the speedo guys, sorry mom.

Unfortunately, the weather was not in the best mood - it was grey and cool when we arrived and degrading from there.  After scoping out the scene we realized that this place was a beach club for members who paid for the season.  They'd rent out some umbrellas to non-members but only way in the back row.

We later saw a slice of public beach 100 yards away, which was bustling and lively.  You bring your own umbrella and chairs and it's free - more what I'm used to and definitely where we'll head next time.
